Hello Watchet

mfrowde

I have said before that the hardest part of a litter pick can be deciding where to go so we were grateful that someone who saw our Wellington post suggested Watchet, that made it much easier and that was where we went today.

Mum, Zoe & Ben dropped Daddy and I off – they headed off to Blue Anchor for a dog walk along the beach whilst we picked. We started our walk off with a chocolate biscuit today – just to get a bit of energy😅

If you would like to sponsor me and are able to then you can do so here:

And if you’d like to see where we have been in map form you can find all our picks here:

It was quite warm in the sun, but as soon as you went in the shade you felt cold. Mum had dropped us in an entrance to a business and we picked a couple of things here before heading down the main road towards the Station in Watchet. We thought we would try and do a loop so rather than crossing over the railway line we walked down on the right hand side of it. Down this bit of road we found a few wrappers in weeds and along the side of the road. Some of these things were quite hard to get, as they got tangled in the plants.

We then turned up a hill and came to an area where there were lots of cars parked. We found a lot of cigarettes in just one place - we thought this could've been someone who comes here a lot in their car and just chuck's them out the window. We walked around the bend – picking up a dried and very white dog poo which had been left outside someones window. We then carried on down this road. We found a small pile of plastic and screws this was a bit fiddly to get with the pickers so we gathered it together and Dad scooped it into the bag with his gloves.

Next we headed down Goviers Lane a quite narrow lane where we found a pair of ladies pants as well as several bottles and cans thrown in the hedge. At the bottom of the lane we had a choice of going down over the railway line or following a path up to a park. We chose the park.

There were a few bits of rubbish on the path up to the park some on the path and some chucked into the plants the other side of the wire fence.

I thought it was quite a nice park which was well looked after there were only a few pieces of rubbish around the sides in the hedges and near a bench. I had a go on some of the equipment there which was fun and then we made our way back out of the gates .

After we had finished in the park we then carried on along the same fence from before there were more items here again some which we had to lean over to get. We found a lot more sweet, chocolate and crisp wrappers here.

There was a shelter that was very dirty on the inside, it had cans , cigarettes, broken glass and a lot of bottle tops. I also found that there were a lot of bottle tops stuck in the muddy ground outside, these were quite hard to get out as they were stuck quite far in. It took me quite a while.

We walked down to the bottom of the field – it was nice to be able to hear the waves crashing on the beach as we walked along. There was a lot of sweet wrappers and plastic along this bit blown up against the bottom of the hedge.

At the end of the park we turned left over a little bridge and into a car park. It seems to be a common theme with car parks but there were quite a few empty alcohol cans chucked into the bushes – some of them were quite hard to get out.

We carried on along the coast path and came to a nice area with some benches and sculptures and a lovely viewing point from which you could look out over Watchet itself. Dad found another pair of pants here – mens this time – slung on top of the undergrowth behind a nice bench. As we were leaving this bit we saw a steam train leave which was cool.

We walked down the narrow path back along the railway tracks and then headed out to and along the harbour – it’s been a while since Dad last came to Watchet and he says that that area seems to be transformed it was really nice to wander along the quay\harbour area (although there was a dog poo left in the middle of the path that we had to clear up!)

Other than the dog poo I don’t think we found too much litter in the main section. Maybe a bottle left on a seat and a few bits of paper around the museum.

We came to an entrance way to a little beach and a sea pool – which we decided to go down and investigate - it was quite windy down here, and we didn't find too much rubbish which was good - just 2 or 3 bits on the slipway. The beach itself and pool area were clean. The water felt a bit cold in the pool so we decided not to go for a swim.

We headed back up to the road and continued up towards where the road is now closed. There were lots of cool displays on some window sills, one with Lego and one with sea shells! We really liked those – added some more character to the place.

The top of the hill was closed off due to the dangerous cliffs- on the way up to the closure we found quite a lot of rubbish in the hedges bottles, cans and face masks were most common. Just before the closure was an open bit of ground and we found some mattress springs up there as well as lots of cans and bottles. In the road itself we found some car parts - a wing mirror and a couple of mud flaps. A lot of the stuff we found before had been light, but the bits we were finding now were starting to feel heavier. There was one plastic pot stuck in a hedge which was difficult to get – the plastic was very fragile and just broke when we tried to pull it out. We had to pull apart the bushes and ease the pots out gently using our hands.

We got the a message from the dog walkers that they were done so we started to head back to the station. We found a ball for Bruce as we walked back which we picked up. At the end as we were taking a picture by the Station Sign, Bruce's ball rolled away! Dad went off to find it and came back with an empty can of fosters, a large plastic bag and the ball! We thought he’d love the ball but he managed to leave it in the car when we got home – I think he realised it was time for a biscuit and that was more important!

Today we walked for about 2hours and 20 minutes today – a phone problem means we had to split Strava route into 2 but in total we covered about 5.58km and picked up 7.56kg of rubbish & recycling.
