Cigarette Butt City

Updated: Mar 14, 2022

The forecast for this weekend was not great and as Dad also had quite a few things to do this weekend (Zoe had hockey - joint player of the match! Well Done Zoe! - she also had cricket later and it's also Mum's birthday on Sunday so there was some shopping to be done) so we got up early on Saturday to get the picking done. It was a bright 7.30 start. It was actually quite a nice morning - we had thought it was going to be a bit cold but we didn't need our coats.

We had had a request this week from someone to do the area around the hospital path towards Castle - so that was where we headed. We parked in the layby outside the Blue Fish chip shop and set off to walk along the path past Musgrove Park Hospital and then onto our main target area.

You often see smokers just outside the grounds of the hospital and the mess they leave is horrible. There were so many cigarette butts left on the floor around the bins that have been provided. Really horrible to see and the Hospital really ought to take more ownership of the problem. We could have spent our whole time around the bins but decided that we didn't really have time to pick them all up so after clearing up a load we carried on with our walk. We did a bit of a loopy walk with Henley Road being our central point.

We walked about 5.5km and picked up about 6.3kg of rubbish. We found about 3.2kg of recycling and the rest was rubbish. We found quite a few cans, and boxes from Tesco - they seem to be the most littered retailer around here, as well as bits of tin foil and tissue. There were also quite a few glass bottles which are perfect for contributing to our weight count!

When we started todays pick, we didn’t think we would end up with too much - as although there bits around they were small, but we ended up getting a lot more than expected!

Todays worst pick was the half eaten Tesco Cottage pie from a bush along the hospital path which stank.

So far we have done 4 picks, walked 23KM and collected 26.14kg of rubbish.
