North Petherton was a bit filthy!

It was wet, windy and really not very nice today so I needed a bit of encouragement to go out. Dad didn’t want to go tomorrow as my brother has a cyclo-cross race down in Plymouth and he will be busy taxi-ing him to that.
We sat round the table and tried to come up with places to go – we decided it would either be Monkton Heathfield or North Petherton. As we drove through Monkton we somehow decided that North Petherton was the best option – not really sure what swayed it but the decision was made.
We parked outside North Petherton Rugby club with the intention of walking to the other side of North Petherton and then back.
We’ve stopped taking our more rigid bags (the wire in them has started poking out and bashing our leges) so we set off with a bin bag each. It does mean that we are a bit more limited as you cannot get as much in the bin bags.
There are some new houses being built on the south side of North Petherton and quite a lot of the rubbish we found was related to this build – quite a lot of plastic bags that have not been disposed of properly, a cardboard box which would have been full of nail gun bits – some polystyrene sheets which we presumed were related to the house building – we also got a car wheel cover.
There was also lots of the usual, coke and pepsi cans, soft drinks bottles, several cider bottles, lager cans and of course McDonalds detritus. One thing we did find much more of this time were forks – there were several plastic forks and a couple of wooden forks – dad says it’s probably the result of post night out kebabs.
As I mentioned at the start we had planned to walk all the way through North Petherton but by the time we reached the park our bags were already pretty much full so we decided to turn back at that point and head back to the car.
We were only gone just over an hour (1 hour and 11 minutes to be precise) but in that time we covered 2.6 km and manged to collect
3.2kg of recycling and 7.5kg of rubbish
Which is quite a lot for such a short walk.
The bin bags we have at the moment are a bit rubbish (!) just a bit too weak for walking around with and collecting litter in. We had to leave a bag about 100 meters from the car and go and pick it up as it just wasn’t going to make it all the way.
